Every plan on the ACA Marketplace is labeled Bronze, Silver, Gold, or — in some areas — Platinum. It's a good system once you know what it measures, and a confusing one if you assume the metal describes quality of care. It doesn't. Every metal tier has to cover the same set of essential health benefits; what changes is how the cost of that coverage is split between your premium and your out-of-pocket spending.
What the metal tiers actually measure
Each tier targets a rough "actuarial value" — the share of total healthcare costs the plan is designed to cover for a standard population, versus what you'd pay out of pocket in deductibles, copays, and coinsurance:
- Bronze: plan covers about 60% of costs on average; you cover about 40%.
- Silver: plan covers about 70%; you cover about 30%.
- Gold: plan covers about 80%; you cover about 20%.
- Platinum (where offered): plan covers about 90%; you cover about 10%.
Lower metal tiers trade a lower monthly premium for higher costs when you actually use care. Higher tiers do the opposite — you pay more every month for lower costs at the doctor's office or pharmacy.

The Silver wrinkle: cost-sharing reductions
Silver plans have one feature the other tiers don't: if your household income qualifies, you may be eligible for cost-sharing reductions that lower your deductible and copays well below a standard Silver plan's numbers — sometimes close to Gold or Platinum-level costs, at Silver-level premiums after subsidies. This benefit is only available on Silver plans, which is why Silver is worth checking carefully even if Bronze looks cheaper on the surface. Whether you qualify depends entirely on your income relative to the federal poverty level, so it's worth running the actual numbers rather than assuming.

- Check your subsidy eligibility first. Premium tax credits can shrink the premium gap between tiers significantly, and cost-sharing reductions can make Silver the clear winner for qualifying households.
- Estimate your actual healthcare use. Ongoing prescriptions, a chronic condition, or a planned procedure point toward Gold. Rare doctor visits and a preference for lower monthly cost point toward Bronze.
- Compare the full picture, not just the premium. A Bronze plan's lower premium can be erased by one unplanned visit if the deductible is high — run the total cost scenario, not just the sticker price.
- Confirm your doctors and prescriptions are covered on the specific plan you're considering, since networks and formularies vary by plan, not just by tier.
